Learning Objectives

After attending the Symposium, participants should be able to:

A. Define current options for evaluating and managing atypical hyperplasia
B. Describe contemporary issues in treatment of lobular carcinoma in situ
C. Identify appropriate risk assessment tools for management of women at high risk for breast cancer
D. Recommend genetic testing for management of BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 carriers
E. Distinguish appropriate uses of neoadjuvant therapies for early stage breast cancer
F. Explain the role of lifestyle modification and chemoprevention as appropriate risk-reduction strategies
G. Compare uses of multiple breast-imaging modalities including digital mammography, whole breast ultrasound, breast MRI, thermography, and molecular breast imaging for cancer screening and diagnosis
H. Address psychosocial components in management of breast cancer patients and family care
I. Consider the implications of long-term management and surveillance on patient quality of life
J. Describe issues in managing recurrence of breast cancer
K. Consider appropriate uses, based on current clinical trial data, of adjuvant therapies for advanced stage and metastatic breast cancer
L. Understand the role of primary care physicians and other healthcare professionals in multidisciplinary management of breast disease
M. Discuss approaches to management of local-regional failures, including ipsilateral tumor recurrence
N. Describe the differences among multiple national breast cancer quality assurance measures and their implications for practice
O. Explain basic principles in oncoplastic surgery and current approaches to breast-conserving surgery in early stage breast cancer
P. Participate actively in tumor board case discussions involving risk assessment, screening, benign breast disease management, hormone therapy, uses and candidates for systemic therapy, preoperative therapies, and adjuvant therapies in early stage disease, and use of novel targeted agents
